Today’s post is a little different from the usual in that it has nothing to do with anything else on the blog. Oh well.
My commute home from work usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. During that time I like to have something to listen to other than music. I usually turn on the radio to Entertainment Weekly or Radio Andy but that’s touch and go depending on what’s playing. What I really love to listen to are podcasts!
When I bring them up I’m always surprised to find that so many people haven’t tried listening to one before. There are podcasts for any and every topic you could imagine. There are podcasts for people who like crafting, podcasts about politics, podcasts about gaming, podcasts about being a parent or a student or a teacher. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text reads through each of the 199 chapters of Harry Potter as if it were a sacred text. (Self explanatory) Lore discusses the stories that drive our superstitions. Eliza Starting at 16 is a podcast by a girl named Eliza and she talks about life from a teenager’s perspective. There is no limit to what you can find. And the best thing about podcasts is, they’re free! Who doesn’t like free?!
Here you will find a short list of podcasts I think you should listen to RIGHT NOW!! Or if you’re not interested in any of these
we can no longer be friends find one you are interested in. Go! Go! Go!
If you like
murder as much as I do True Crime…
My Favorite Murder (10/10)
This is my all-time favorite podcast! I started listening to it back in July of last year when we moved to San Antonio and it has been my constant car-companion ever since. This podcast blends murder and humor effortlessly. I cannot get enough of it. I even attended a live show in Austin. (One of my 101 in 1001 goals crossed off the list!) It was amazing and filled with other Murderinos (that’s what they call their listeners) like me! Hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, the girls tell each other their favorite murder stories every week. There are also minisodes where they read hometown murders submitted by their listeners. You don’t have to listen in order, but I like to. And you can skip the chatter that takes up the first 10-20 minutes, but I don’t. If you like true crime, this is the place to start! Stay sexy and don’t get murdered! #SSDGM
Martinis & Murder (6.5/10)
This podcast is similar to MFM but the hosts, Daryn Carp and John Thrasher, discuss one murder together and sometimes they split up a murder into multiple episodes. If you don’t like the extra chattiness on My Favorite Murder, this might work for you.
Up and Vanished (7/10)
In Up and Vanished, Payne Lindsey investigates the previously unsolved disappearance of former Georgia beauty queen, Tara Grinstead. Spoiler alert: (only because it’s been in the news) the case is now solved!
Missing Richard Simmons (8/10)
Okay, this isn’t really “true crime” but I guess that depends on what you believe has happened to Richard Simmons. In February 2014, Richard Simmons went AWOL. He stopped making TV appearances, quit teaching his exercise classes, and cut off even his closest friends. In just six short and sweet episodes, Dan Taberski, former friend of Richard, tries to figure out what happened to him. The theories are just as kooky as Richard Simmons used to be. This is a great podcast to binge!
If you like Reality TV…
Straight Up with Stassi (5/10)
Maybe I should have said “If you watch Bravo” instead because both of these podcasts are Bravo related. If you’ve seen Vanderpump Rules, you know who Stassi Schroeder is. This podcast is her perspective on everything that is happening in the world around her. Pop culture, reality TV, relationships etc.
Watch What Crappens (9/10)
I just recently started listening to this podcast and it is my new favorite thing ever! If you are a Bravo junkie like I am you will love this podcast. Hosts Ben Mandelker and Ronnie Karam hilariously retell and hash out the episodes of Real Housewives, Southern Charm, Vanderpump Rules, Ladies of London, etc. all while imitating the women and men on the shows. I generally watch just Real Housewives and Vanderpump but “Watch What Crappens” makes me want to watch them all!
If you need Jesus because you’ve been listening to stories about murder and watching too much reality TV…
Elevation Church Podcast (10/10)
This is by far my favorite Christian podcast and I have listened to several. It is recordings of the sermons and series at Elevation Church. Pastor Steven Furtick is dynamic and straightforward in his preaching. Also very funny! It’s conversational in tone but always has an impacting message. I love it! This podcast is what gets me through every day. I listen in the morning while I’m getting ready for work. I listen before I go to bed. I listen while I’m cleaning house. I downloaded every episode available and am making my way through them in chronological order. (I’m still in 2015.) I would recommend this podcast above all others. Get some Jesus in your day!
I hope you’ll take the time to give at least one of these a listen. What are some of your favorite podcasts?
